“Maybe I’ll sing you a song,” says the multi-award-winning actress and musician, Jennifer Hudson. “I’m gonna fly-yyy away with my swoops.” She’s singing—in perfect falsetto, of course—about the two bold “swoops” of liquid black liner that she’s just drawn around her almond-shaped eyes. 30 x ColourPop Eyeshadow Quad Ideas

With the addition of 24 new shades to the ColourPop Pressed Powder Shadow family, I thought now would be a good time to refresh ideas on possible “quads” of shades featuring currently available eyeshadows (hopefully I caught any that were discontinued!).

About This Series

Each look idea is centered around a “quad” of four shades with the expectation that one might bring in the appropriate brow bone or additional transitional shade based on skin tone. I know that I tend to use more like five or six shades in a typical look, but I think that four is a happy medium to give a good idea of the “core” color scheme of a look while giving you the ability to lighten/darken as desired. I have listed the colors in this order: inner lid, middle of lid, outer lid/crease, and crease/above crease.

You might see combinations that seem slightly repeated but placement will vary (e.g. a halo placement where the lightest and more shimmery shade is placed on the center) as placement can also create a different effect/look! You might also want to consider incorporating your favorite matte/shimmer shades (as applicable) to increase the versatility of certain palettes. Consider these ideas a jumping off point!

ColourPop Rendezvous Pressed Powder Shadow Palette Review & Swatches

Rendezvous

Colour Pop Rendezvous 12-Pan Pressed Powder Shadow Palette ($16.00 for 0.36 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette exclusively available at Ulta. It includes a mix of repromotes along with new shades; the repromotes include: My Treat, Want U Back, Two Birds, Never Never, and Let’s Do It. It’s another winning palette from the brand, so if the colors are up your alley and not repeated in your stash already, it’s certainly worth considering. The eyeshadows were pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing on the whole with minor, more nitpicky deficits than major issues.

My Treat

My Treat is a soft peach with warm, orange undertones and a sparkling, metallic sheen. The consistency felt more loosely-pressed in the pan, so it was easy to pick up too much product on a brush and get fallout during application. It had rich color payoff that adhered well when pressed and patted onto the skin first. It lasted well for eight hours on me before fading a bit.

Formula Overview

$5.00/0.04 oz. - $125.00 Per Ounce

The new Pressed Powder Shadow formula is supposed to be “highly pigmented” with an “ultra-velvety and silky” texture that is “long-wearing” and “adheres easily to the eyes.” Most of the shades have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation that applies well to bare skin, blends out without issue, and lasts for seven to eight hours. The matte eyeshadows tend to be a little more powdery, though soft and finely-milled, in the pan, while the shimmers have a creamier, dense consistency. Occasionally, the more sparkly or metallic shades apply better with fingertips or a dampened brush.

Ingredients

Dimethicone, Boron Nitride, Lauroyl Lysine, Magnesium Stearate, Dimethiconol, Phenoxyethanol, Talc, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Hexylene Glycol, Bismuth Oxychloride (CI 77163), Mica (CI 77019), Iron Oxides (CI 77491), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891).

Our Secret

Our Secret is a medium-dark, coppery red with subtle, warm undertones and a sparkling finish. It had good color coverage, but the eyeshadow had a looser press to it, so there was some fallout during application. I’d recommend using a dampened brush with this shade (or a fingertip) to get better adherence and less fallout. It stayed on well for eight hours on me with slight fallout.

Style and Grace

Style and Grace is a muted, medium-dark coral with warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow felt a little powdery in the pan, but it didn’t sheer out too readily when applied to bare skin. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that went on evenly and blended out nicely along the edges. It wore well for eight hours on me before fading noticeably.

Want U Back

Want U Back is a muted, medium-dark rosy brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff that applied evenly to bare skin and blended out easily along the edges, though there was slight fallout during application. The consistency was on the powdery side in the pan, so make sure to tap off excess. It lasted well for eight hours before I noticed slight fading.

Shake It Off

Shake It Off is a muted, medium red with subtle, cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation with a soft, dustier texture that wasn’t quite as dry as I’d expect for a red-hued shade. The eyeshadow blended out nicely on my lid and stayed on nicely for eight hours on me before fading noticeably.

Catch

Catch is a rich, deep copper with warm, orange undertones and a pearly sheen. It was richly pigmented with a smooth consistency that had noticeable slip–like it was more silicone-heavy–but thankfully, it adhered well to bare skin and did not appear uneven. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me before creasing faintly.

Release

Release is a bright, light-medium teal with subtle, cool undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The eyeshadow had opaque color payoff paired with a smooth, moderately dense consistency that wasn’t too thick or too firmly pressed in the pan. It still picked up and transferred well to bare skin, and I had no trouble diffusing the edges. It lasted beautifully for eight and a half hours on me and didn’t seem to have fallout that I could discern.

Textual

Textual is a deep, reddish-brown with warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had intense color coverage in a single layer, which applied evenly and blended out without minimal effort. The texture was soft, velvety, and slightly dusty in the pan, though it wasn’t prone to fallout during application. The eyeshadow lasted well for eight hours on me before fading a bit.

Let's Do It

Let’s Do It is a dark black with neutral undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque color coverage that adhered well to bare skin, though it could have been a little more blendable. The texture was slightly drier compared to other mattes in the palette but did not give me trouble with fallout. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me before fading faintly.

ColourPop Sweetener Lux Lipstick Review & Swatches

Sweetener

Colour Pop Sweetener Lux Lipstick ($7.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a deep, magenta pink with strong, cool blue undertones and a satin finish. It had good pigmentation with a smooth, lightweight consistency that was creamy enough not to tug but didn’t feel slippery when worn. The color applied evenly, but I felt like the finish had a tendency to accentuate my lip lines a bit, though it wasn’t noticeable due to the brightness and intensity of the color itself. It wore well for six hours, left a pinkish stain behind, and was lightly hydrating over time.

Formula Overview

$7.00/0.12 oz. - $58.33 Per Ounce

The formula that is supposed to be a "creamy-matte" that "glides on like butter, doesn't feather or bleed, and lasts so long you'll forget you're even wearing it." The majority of the shades were quite pigmented with full color payoff in a single stroke with a few in the more semi-opaque coverage range.

The texture was, on average, smooth, lightly creamy, and not too thick or too thin, so there was no tugging during application but the color didn't feel slippery while worn, which made them easier to apply straight from the tube and low-maintenance on the lips.

They tend to dry and wear down to a soft matte finish within one to three hours of wear, and while they are very lightweight on, they hug the lips more as they become more matte (compared to initial feel). The wear time has been between four and six hours for most shades, and most shades were non-drying to lightly hydrating. They were vanilla-scented but had no discernible taste.

Make Up For Ever 104 Blue White Star Lit Diamond Powders Reviews & Swatches

104 Blue White

Make Up For Ever 104 Blue White Star Lit Diamond Powder ($26.00 for 0.08 oz.) has pale, almost silvery-white base with a strong, aqua-to-blue sheen, though it sometimes flashed almost pink but very rarely did I see that except when contorting myself to do so. Most of the time, it looks like a very high-shine, metallic pop of icy blue. It had medium, buildable pigmented with a loose, lightly sparkly texture–I could tell there were lots of sparkles in it but didn’t feel chunky–that was decent on its own, especially on cheeks, but benefited greatly from a tacky base or adhesive spray.

As an eyeshadow, there was some fallout when applied with a dry brush, but when I pressed and patted it into place, then gently buffed the edges, it adhered for the most part (though you’d want to do your eyes first!) and stayed in place well for eight hours with light fallout over time. As a highlighter, it buffed beautifully against my skin and gave it a moderately luminous effect with some sparkle and a definite shift. It stayed on well on my cheeks for eight hours with minimal movement/travel from the sparkles.

Formula Overview

$26.00/0.08 oz. - $325.00 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to be "buildable, blendable, [and] light-reflective" and can be used on the eyes, face, and body. The brand says that they can be applied with "brush or fingers," and while they say that "for cleaner application and stronger hold, wet brush with" an adhesive spray, it does imply it can be used without for less clean/less hold. The powders seem as finely-milled as they're going to get, but they have micro-sparkle and sparkle to them so they have a drier, almost loose glittery texture overall. Some shades seemed to have a stronger base color that came through than others, which were more glittery overall with a sheerer or transparent base.

I wore several of them on cheeks as well as eyes with most shades performing decently without an adhesive spray/tacky base, but the wear time was between six and eight hours with light to moderate fallout (depending on the shade) on eyes and eight hours on cheeks with some sparkle migration over time. I definitely would recommend using the product with an adhesive spray for the "cleaner application and stronger hold" the brand says it would result in.
